POLYPHONY – On [Listening/Hearing] in a “Messy World”

In the PFF Salon, we explore a concept that originally described the simultaneous sounding of independent voices. We apply it to social contexts and ask what polyphony can mean in a world of multiple resonance chambers. Moving between multilingualism and variations of artistic self-assertion, as well as between contested forms of participation, we investigate how we hear voices and deal with dissonance.

Sam Zamrik is a trans-queer author, translator, and political educator. Originally from Damascus, she was a co-founder of the “New Wave of Syrian Metal.” Her literary debut, ICH BIN NICHT (I AM NOT), was published by Hanser.

Andreas Oberprantacher is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Innsbruck and Head of the Unit for Peace and Conflict Studies. He reflects on a “messy world” shaped by processes of discrimination, but also by resistance and solidarity.
