Aïta Mon Amour is a duo consisting of Widad Mjama and Khalil EPI. This project is the result of Widad’s fascination with the ancient Moroccan art of Aita, a popular musical genre that has its roots in the Moroccan countryside and is sung by the Chikhates, the singers and guardians of a centuries-old tradition. Aita, which means ‘cry’ or ‘call’, embodies both the call of warriors and the lament of love. Aïta Mon Amour celebrate this orally transmitted art form in their own unique way, deconstructing it and transforming it into the contemporary, digital age.
Widad is one of Morocco’s first rappers and a central figure in Moroccan hip-hop culture. Khalil is a music producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist born in Tunisia. He works live with Deena Abdelwahed, Arabstazy and Ammar 808, among others, as well as with contemporary dance ensembles.
