Maria W Horn & Sara Parkman present Funeral Folk 【SWE】

Funeral Folk is a compelling musical collaboration between Swedish folk violinist Sara Parkman and spectralist composer Maria W Horn. Together, they delve into the profound rituals of grief and the musical phenomenology of death, weaving their respective crafts and influences into a unique tapestry of sound.

Their musical bond stretches back to their teenage years, playing in the same band in their hometown of Härnösand, Ångermanland, Sweden. This shared history forms the bedrock of Funeral Folk, allowing them to explore a vast sonic landscape that spans from sacred songs, spectral music, and black metal, to traditional folk melodies from their home region. As part of their creative process, they immersed themselves in lamentation techniques from Finnish Karelia, historically used to express personal and collective grief and to guide the deceased on their final journey.

The resulting music features a rich and varied instrumentation, including synths, zithers, hurdy-gurdy, guitars, mellotrons, voices, and even rusty cowbells. For their live performances, Mats Erlandsson joins them on guitar and zither, adding another layer to their deeply resonant sound.
