With her band, Dutch singer, actress, and theater maker Meral Polat intertwines 1970s Turkish psychedelic rock with the tradition of Kurdish Dengbej storytelling. On her latest album, MEYDAN, these sounds are further enriched with influences from Malian blues and Nigerian Afrobeat. At the very center is Polat’s haunting vocals—longing, fierce, and full of determination—a tribute to the strength of women, echoing ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadi’ (‘Woman, Life, Freedom’).
