Sound artist Crystn Hunt Akron transforms the hidden sounds of plastic waste into captivating auditory experiences. In her project PLASTICPHONIA, she collaborates with Greenpeace, environmentalists, and Clean Up the Beaches initiatives, actively collecting plastic debris washed ashore.
From these discarded items — be it brushes, bags, buckets, bottles, or hoses — Crystn creates unique sampled tones through field recordings. These plastic sounds form the foundation for her original compositions, presented as live concerts, room installations, and workshop series. It’s a powerful statement: Trash goes Music – a sustainable exploration and utilization of our throwaway society’s legacy.
The visual dimension of PLASTICPHONIA is brought to life by multimedia artist Christopher Noelle, performing under his pseudonym TOFA. He masterfully mixes a live visual world combining real images, sound-reactive AI imagery, and 3D animations. This collaboration creates an exciting audiovisual symbiosis, guiding the audience on a fantastical visual journey while simultaneously illustrating the stark reality of plastic pollution. The aim is to spark discussion and reflection.
